News Illustration Project

In this assignment, the student is required to illustrate an image that pertains to a news story as well as its topic in order to develop a detail oriented composition.

The news story I followed basically sums up the collegiate effort in checking wastewater to ensure that coronavirus should not show up within results. See the full story here: https://www.npr.org/2020/10/26/925831847/colleges-turn-to-wastewater-testing-in-an-effort-to-flush-out-the-coronavirus

In my final version called “Pandora’s Tunnel”, the emphasis on the unexpected behavior attributed through coronavirus spread is used symbolically. Additionally, pandora is depicted through the yellow on the more “organic” or demonized side of the well while the more engineered side swells in artificiality.

Right Here, Right Now

In this assignment, the student is required to compose an illustration that captures the essence of movement through nature and everyday life. Whether this is portrayed through nature, the environment, and it’s people; this assignment is up to the artists discretion.

For my work, I studied the basic geometric, rigid shaping of the trees and its diverse color palette that brings about the drastic shift of autumn’s colors. This includes burgundy, red, greens, and green-yellows.

Preliminary works include physical work and a gradient study, which would portray this “shift”. I was determined to portray this shift through oil pastel and acrylic paint. However, thinking outside the box is portraying a kind of blend or shift that can incorporated in my non-representative piece.

For my final piece, I have decided to capture a portion on what makes Alfred’s autumn colors unique and shifting to rigid form that encompasses the myriad of colors stored at the background. What could have been better about the piece was the delivery, as the full extent of autumn’s beauty is muffled in the final. Though my aim was to make these colors apparent, it does play a part in everyday life as the environment symbolizes change. Blends aren’t as noticeable as I would like it and would prefer to remove the blues within this piece as it is distracting.

Progress Report: Environmental Color and Form

For this assignment, we are to gather a full understanding of the environment and it’s autumn colors, and to capture its form. Such as trees, fern, leaves, and grass which all have their distinct colors.

My goal is to play further with form digitally and potentially with different mediums through Alfreds fall colors m.

(And a bonus with wildlife)

“Wanton” Addressing Stereotypes and Diversity

For this project, we are to compose a design based on our prompts from our previous assignments and respond to the questions in regard to our work.

  • Of the drawings you created, in which did you consciously address race or ethnicity?

None, in the previous assignment there is no intentional use of race.

  • When you did address it, why and how did you address it?

At no point.

  • If you did not why not, and how might you address it if you were given another chance?

I hadn’t realized that was an option , but if I could then I would consider that as an alternate style or narrative to use when illustrating.

  • Which drawings were the most stereotypical, and why do you think so?

In assignment 2, it’d have to be the illustration involving the ant and the smaller bee. Just because those were two different kinds of insects.

  • How might you make them less stereotypical if you were given another chance?

By creating a diverse party based on the prompts provided.

For my prompt “Chicken[s] in the big city”, I took it at face value by illustrating a giant chicken in oil pastel within a lesser detailed city. For ironic purposes, there could have been much more to expand on, but for the sake of capturing a chicken in such a setting I gave this chicken power. As it’s illustrated you will see it throwing tornadoes, but for continuity reasons, there will be no lightning or crackling storm. Instead the chickens massive body creates a gravitational pull and makes it the center of this piece.

The title of this piece, meaning deliberate and unprovoked is meant to convey the chickens unprovoked violence against people who may have lived in this city.

Exercise 2: Super Class-time Sketchbook Assignment Monochrome Edition
