In this assignment, the student is required to articulate a composition that focuses on atmospheric perspective. Using a chair and a patterned background, we were able to accomplish this atmospheric perspective using charcoal. In my design I wanted to demonstrate fluidity within the curves and how the cloth is traveling down the paper. I personally found that the angle I chose was a successful one, achieving accuracy in the overall composition. For my background, I wanted to demonstrate waves and that the waves increase in stroke going downwards from the top. In order to achieve this design, I used charcoal, vine charcoal, a gummy eraser, a “shammy”, a kneaded pencil, and a ruler. Though challenging, I found that this assignment further enlightened my ability to use charcoal effectively and also demonstrate atmospheric perspective through it.

The preliminary work to start off our idea of what atmospheric perspective is and how it is applied to objects. The first and foremost of the design process begins with our understanding of atmospheric perspective.

With that we used “flags” to show this atmospheric perspective as well as the shading that is incorporated in the design.

Then we are to gesture draw the chairs with the cloth on them in order to get a better understanding as to what we will encounter in our final. the chair we like the most will be used for our final.
